This is one of the best books on the history of mountaineering that I have ever read. It describes various expeditions and attempts to gain new altitude records before Mallory's attempt on Everest.
An in-depth history of the late 1800s quest to climb higher and higher. They found the Andes and then the Himalayas. By "they" I mean the Europeans who created this group pitted against one another in these quests.
