The ideal ending to a wonderful summer of reading.  I loaded this one on my MP3 before I left on vacation, but just got to it this week.  Elizabeth Adler is known for her lush portrayals of Mediterranean romantic getaways, and this one certainly provides it all-- romance, scenery, and a hint of mystery

Although it could have been stereotypical-- more girl is disappointed with first love.  Girl runs away to "be alone" and "discover herself".  Girl meets boy and boy's father.  Girl is show more looking for her father. Girl looks for happiness in the land (and house) of her childhood--Adler manages to avoid the hackneyed and gives us a character with some depth.

Lamour Harrington, a recent widow and certified landscape architect returns to the house where she grew up with her less than orthodox and now dead father, a famous author.  She intends to restore the old house and find happiness being independent.  She also wants to find out "the rest of the story" surrounding the meager facts she has been given about her father's death.  Was his death an accident?  Was he murdered?  What really happened and why won't anybody talk about it?

She doesn't figure on Italian men, and their perception that "independent woman" is an oxymoron.  Her romanticized memories of the past are not meshing with the realities of today, and her struggles to achieve her dreams provide the reader with a lovely warm and fuzzy read when something not too heavy is called for.

Adler's descriptions of the Amalfi coast area and her discussion of Italian cuisine always rate high with me, and her portrayal of the emotional roller-coaster ride of the main character is equally satisfying.  The audio version is well-done by Carrington MacDuffie.

Would also appeal to Chick Lit fans, and probably Women's Fiction fans look for a little escapism. Still a very rich-and-famous setting and characters.

I think Adler shot for the feel of a 1940's PI film noir, but without the noir. It falls flat without the noir. The PI has a steady girlfriend who helps him while trying to get him to propose -- a la "Girl Friday".

More of a mystery than romance or suspense...

I personally dislike the rich-and-famous, and every time one of those "detail added show more features" comes up, I get annoyed. However, if the reader likes that, I can see them liking Adler. I do like the dogs she adds to her stories. show less
Did not like this book. Sunny was an idiot. I'm I suppose to feel sorry for her? I'd love to be able to just take off and go to France, fly first class and stay in a luxury hotel, with my little purse dog. Of course Mac's postponing the wedding is bad. But it doesn't seem like Sunny was that invested in the wedding. She hadn't invited anyone -her best friend or her parents. She had a dress she didn't even like!

Sunny is beautiful, rich, has her own business and rich handsome men falling over show more her. Why is she being such an idiot? She is portrayed as this successful, independent, biker girl and she is feeling like she needs to prove her self. It makes no sense.

Kitty is such an obvious tramp. The offer from Maha has such obvious red flags only a fool would think it was a good idea.

I spent most of the book hoping something bad was going to happen to Sunny.

It would have made more sense to switch Pru with Sunny. Pru needing to prove her independence would have made sense. Also the comments on her being innocent applies better to Pru.

I guess the author thought it should be Sunny because she is a re-occurring character in the series. But I don't care about Sunny when she acts OOC & stupid.

Spoiler alert - Sunny & Mac end up back right where they started!

Fen Dexter is a solitary woman who prefers a quiet night at home with her dog, Hector, over anything else --- except maybe the company of her two nieces she raised. One evening, as she happily prepares for a night in, a nasty storm hits the California coast. When Fen's power goes out, a relatively frequent occurrence since she lives on the outskirts of town, and a stranger comes knocking on her door with a knife in hand, her evening goes from quiet to scary in a heartbeat.

Vivi, Fen's oldest show more niece, is dealing with her own problems. Having recently broken up with her fiancé, she's emotionally overloaded, and as an emergency room doctor, she needs to keep her emotions in check. Wanting nothing more than to see her Aunt Fen, the storm feels like one more hurdle to overcome in an already hectic night. A young woman is brought in. She is soon identified as the victim of a serial killer that murders his victims and leaves a post-it not saying "Please Don't Tell.

Betwen the three women , the detective, the man who invades Fen's world and a renowned surgeon that is interested in Vivi, the worlds collide. Events take a strange turn and no one knows how anyone or anything is interconnected. The biggest question they have is... is there a killer much closer than they think?

There's a bit of everything in this novel --- suspense, romance, action --- and it all blends together very well. It's a fast read, and you'll keep reading just to discover what will to happen to these three women. All are immensely likable characters thrown into some crazy situations.

3 ★ for a quick and entertaing read.
