Every book to date sees Eve or Roarke losing a little more of their rough edge, which is a fabulous thing to happen and one of the main reasons why the series is so compelling. Sometimes, the changes are slight, and show more sometimes, like in DIVIDED IN DEATH, the characters take a huge step forward in healing from past trauma. Roarke is that character this time, and his struggle to let go of his anger and need for vengeance is powerful. After all, that anger and the doling out of revenge is who he is.
At the same time, we see Roarke struggling to make peace with certain knowledge, Ms. Robb captures that sense of loss when a good relationship turns upside-down. At times, watching Eve muddle through that pain and loss is more troubling than her recovered memories. If you are an Eve and Roarke 'shipper, DIVIDED IN DEATH is a tough read.
The spy plot in DIVIDED IN DEATH, however, is so much fun. It adds another level of complexity to the murder. Not only that, but it allows Ms. Robb to speak her mind about the NSA and certain powers it can use in the name of protecting the country. Now that the NSA is over twenty years old, we can say that in some regards, what Eve rails about has come to pass. Hopefully, the rest will remain fictional.
DIVIDED IN DEATH is another strong novel in the series. We see some excellent growth in the characters. At the same time, we continue to see Eve and Roarke demonstrate and overcome marital difficulties. With the addition of a spy plot and corporate espionage, DIVIDED IN DEATH becomes more than your average murder mystery, and I loved every second of it. show less
Stolen in Death is the sixty-second book in author Robb’s In Death series. I don’t know how she does it, how she comes up with a fresh idea, a unique crime every time while simultaneously surrounding you with the familiar characters you’ve come to love. But she does, and it makes me very happy.
The story begins with Eve reluctantly getting glammed up for an event she show more doesn’t really want to attend but will because it’s important and because Roarke has asked her to. An event we know will be disrupted somehow by another grisly, grotesque murder. And Eve and her team will be off, working frantically to get a step ahead of the murderer, to try and keep the body count down. Roarke will accompany her when he can, bringing his own special brand of calm to the chaos, and will help her in their home office. He’ll pretend to be insulted when she tells him he thinks like a cop, but he would do anything – anything – for her. As she would for him.
Stolen in Death is especially good because it has so much Roarke. Who doesn’t want more Roarke? (Pause for swoons, sighs, rapid heartbeat and fluttering eyes.) Roarke recognized the depth of his love from the beginning and was all in from the start. He just had to convince “his cop.” Eve was frightened, hadn’t experienced love, was wary of this clever, cunning thief but fighting the attraction was futile. And over the years and their time together, she’s learned what she thinks of as “the marriage rules” and willingly follows them, accepts the need for closeness and has even – yes, slowly, but still – become more social and widened her circle of friends.
When it becomes apparent that Roarke’s past life has some meaning in this crime Eve becomes even more relentless and determined to quickly solve this crime before any harm comes to Roarke. Lt. Eve Dallas is always pretty scary, but when Roarke’s life may be at stake . . . watch out.
Stolen in Death is another exciting, satisfying addition to this series that I hope continues forever. The pacing is perfect, the ever-growing circle of coworkers, friends and family delightful to see and the cat-and-mouse, clues and danger keep you on the edge of your seat, turning pages as fast as you can. I received an advance copy of this book via NetGalley. You can jump right in at any point in the series but it’s well worth your while to go back to the beginning and meet everybody for the first time and watch all these relationships grow – and see the thrilling police work in action. I can’t wait for Book #63!! I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own. show less
