Reviews
This review is on the uncorrected ARC of the upcoming thriller by Patterson and DiLallo and marks the third time these two authors have collaborated on a project. It does not disappoint.
There comes a time in every cosmetically unaltered woman’s life when the catcalls and whistles cease, the guy at the butcher shop stops flirting, and a gal has to begin buying her own drinks during happy hour. In plain words, she becomes “invisible” to the people around her. It takes some getting used show more to. Elinor Gilbert isn’t adjusting well to this new stage of life. She once had an exciting career chasing white collar criminals for the FBI – until a co-worker burned one of Elinor’s confidential informants (CI in spook speak) and pinned it on her. Since then, she’s been giving music lessons to kids at a private school. Then one morning she gets a call from this same former co-worker, offering her the chance to regain her fallen status with the bureau, come back into the fold, and work as an undercover operative on a project that hopes to expose a drug cartel’s money laundering scheme via the art world. As an invisible woman.
Told in the first person, utilizing Patterson’s trademark short, action-packed chapters, and DiLallo’s comic timing, it is a story that I could not put down. The plot is twisty, character’s vividly drawn as if using a Sharpee, and has an end you won’t see coming. I love that the protagonist is a middle-aged, sort of average woman who’s given a renewed opportunity to shine in an unconventional way. Definitely 5 Stars!

My review for the first book of this series still stands. I suppose I only kept reading after that point out of pure bile fascination, or out of some futile hope that the books would get better and that the plot might in fact go somewhere. I really wanted these books to be good. The original premise sounded good. Winged kids who fight evil overarching entities? Come on, that's cool. Or at least it would be if that was actually what went on, instead of what does happen in this series, which show more is close to nothing.
This book was where the series well and truly jumped the shark, and where I finally stopped reading. It dropped what plot it had left, turned all its characters into Sues (though they were already heading in that direction anyway), and turned into a thinly disguised tract against global warming. I agree with the author on this issue. That doesn't mean I want to be lectured to death on it. If I wanted that, I'd read blog posts on the issue. I DO read blog posts on the issue. In a work of fiction, I expect any such views to be handled with a little more grace and artistry, because literature is supposed to be an art form. If you make it nothing more than your own soapbox, people will not read it, they will not enjoy it, and ultimately it will succumb to the next hot-button issue. The Grapes of Wrath and A Christmas Carol give social commentary. But people have read them, and still read them, because they're good literature, and not propaganda. Learn the difference, James Patterson. show less

The Writer by James Patterson and J. D. Barker is a very highly recommended twisty procedural/thriller. Wow! This is an excellent, suspenseful, twisty roller coaster ride of a novel and it left me dizzy from the twists and turns.
NYPD Detective Declan Shaw is planning to jump in front of a subway train when he gets a call from his investigative partner, Jarod Cordova. He wants to know how fast Shaw can get to the Beresford building on Central Park West. A woman returned home to the tower show more apartment there and found her husband dead. She is asking for Shaw by name.
Once there Shaw sees bestselling true-crime writer Denise Morrow, covered in blood, sitting next to her dead husband. It seems a clear-cut case, but Denise has an alibi and it becomes even more complicated. Searching the apartment it is also discovered that she is writing a book casting doubt on a case that Shaw and Cordova worked on in 2018 that involved the murder of a fourteen-year-old girl in Central Park.
That's all you need to know - once you start reading you will be hooked almost from the start. There are chapters presented from Now and Then (2018) and also excerpts from police transcripts along the way.
The writing is absolutely exceptional, the pace is fast, and the plot is clever and intelligent. There are so many complications and layers of deception in this unpredictable procedural. What you can expect are several stunning revelations and absolutely jaw-dropping twists along the way in this truly addictive, un-put-downable novel.
As for the characters, you won't know who to trust or believe. The whole narrative is one shrewd complicated cat and mouse game where the roles keep changing and then another switch appears to shake it all up again. I'm not saying anything else but read this novel!
The Writer is a perfect choice for readers who love procedurals with plenty of twists. Thanks to Little, Brown and Company for providing me with an advance reader's copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion.

The Murder of King Tut is not a book; it is a cash grab, plain and simple. It is a scheme to remove $33 dollars from the pockets of fans, and reward them with the barest minimum necessary for it to qualify as an actual book. The entire 340 page book can be read in under three hours, written at the level of a particularly bright Grade 4 child. That this piece of hackwork was released at all is utterly contemptible, a middle finger to Patterson's many fans. His hubris is astounding, his show more arrogance depressing. It is that which transforms King Tut from merely being a waste of time into something worthy of all the bile and vitriol one can spew at it.
