About the Author
Maria Mitchell was a nineteenth-century woman who holds a place of distinction as being the first to accomplish a variety of things. America's first woman astronomer, she was also one of the first American astronomers of either gender to win worldwide recognition when she discovered a telescopic show more comet in 1847 (an accomplishment for which she won a gold medal from the king of Denmark). Mitchell was one of the founders of Vassar College, and she served as Vassar's professor of astronomy from 1868 until her death. She was also the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Mitchell was born on the island of Nantucket off the coast of Massachusetts; it was in the island's fog-bound skies that she discovered her comet. Her cometary discoveries, her computations of Venus's orbit that she did for the Nautical Almanac Office, and her other scientific writings were generally published in contemporary journals, but she does leave one collection as a literary legacy. Miss Mitchell's Comet (1847) - Short biography
- Maria Mitchell was the first professional woman astronomer in the U.S. She was born into a Quaker family on Nantucket that believed in the equality of women. Her father built an observatory on the roof of their home and it was through his telescope that she identified a comet in 1847. She worked at Nantucket's Atheneum Library, travelled in Europe with Nathaniel Hawthorne's family, and in 1849 became the first woman employed full-time by the U.S. Nautical Almanac Office. In 1865, Maria Mitchell became professor of astronomy and director of the observatory at the new Vassar College. She was the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
