I wasn't sure how this book would go. The first book in the series started off slow and then got better towards the middle. Usually when that happens, book 2 can go either way... either really good or fall very short. This one stepped it up a notch. I was actually drawn into the story right away. I didn't have to push thru any slow spots this time. I love the MC. She is sassy and rebellious. Then again, she really has nothing to lose as she has a soul-binding contract. I love that even when show more Eden is faced with a problem that will end badly no matter what she does, she finds a workable solution. Of course, pitting a vampire against a goddess could be hazardous to your health. I can't wait to see what mess she gets into next! show less
I usually like it if a book drops me a bit into the deep end and lets me figure stuff out on my own as it goes along. But there is a difference between deliberately using this technique as a writing tool and an incoherent mess. This one leans much more toward the latter. It doesn't feel like it is deliberate. It feels chaotic and just not well-planned. More like a somewhat raw stream of consciousness than text written with structure and intent.
It makes heavy use of memory loss, not to create show more an intriguing mystery and deliberately reveal details of an intricate plot structure but as an excuse to make shit up as needed to move the narrative along.
It has all the hallmarks of the typical productive writing techniques many modern authors use to produce a ton of books within an incredibly short time frame. I still want to call it lazy writing techniques even though many of these authors are not lazy in this sense. They just prioritize quantity over quality in all ways but the cover.

WOW, What an excellent book one that had me rapidly reading! I loved the snarky Eden Hunter with her trash talking mouth against everyone. Once dead, she was brought back to life, signed a contract with a 2400 year old vampire to give him five souls a week, for five years AND she couldn't get off of his island but she was bound by the rain goddess to never kill anyone. Well, that went out the window when a werewolf broke down her door and tried to kill her! Up between a rock and a hard show more place, all she could do was go with her instincts when she was charged with killing her ex-boyfriend. I can't wait to read book two! show less
*I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book*

I liked that the MC is good at heart despite being treated like she is less than dirt. Her boss is definitely someone that I wouldn't want to work for. I love that she is determined to keep the people around her safe if she can. There is also an interesting mash of characters, reapers, goddesses etc.

This book was ok. I was slightly disappointed because it took me longer to get into the story. It is, however, book one in a series so I am not show more surprised. Having read this author before, I know I will read book 2 because it always gets better. show less
