Dnf. I read this as an ebook. I use the word “read” lightly as I quickly discovered that the text had many errors and so I gave up reading it and just looked at the artwork. The book contained many scenes from the Bible all in black and white. Unfortunately the author gave only occasional citation regarding the artist and titles of the paintings that were included. This was disappointing as I would have enjoyed learning more about the artwork. But given that the book was written in the show more early days of photography, what the author was able to put together is quite remarkable.

The author wrote a whole series of books to cover the entire Bible, which was a mammoth effort. Unfortunately, although this volume should have included Genesis to Leviticus, the ebook I read only covered Genesis. It is for this reason that I’m unable to mark it as read. Other volumes in this series seem to have the same issue of incomplete content.

For over one hundred years, the International Critical Commentary series has held a special place among works on the Bible. It has sought to bring together all the relevant aids to exegesis—linguistic and textual no less than archaeological, historical, literary and theological—with a level of comprehension and quality of scholarship unmatched by any other series.

No attempt has been made to secure a uniform theological or critical approach to the biblical text: contributors have been show more invited for their scholarly distinction, not for their adherence to any one school of thought.

The depth of analysis found in the International Critical Commentary (ICC) Series has yet to be surpassed in any commentary collection. One of the best features of this series is the extensive amount of background information given in each volume’s introduction, where all of the analysis is provided before the actual commentary begins. Each volume packs more information into the introduction than you will often find in the body of most commentaries! Also consider that with the electronic versions of each volume, you will never need to leaf through the hundreds of pages in each volume searching for the passage you are studying.

The Bible and its Story is a massive collection of images which illuminate the story of Scripture. The images are taken from modern paintings, illustrations, and other renderings of the ancient text. Together, The Bible and its Story serves as a pictorial narrative of the entire story of the Bible—from beginning to end. It compiles the best of modern artwork to bring the Bible vividly to life.
