About the Author
Philip Norman was born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1953. He received a BA in music and English in 1975, a MA in musicology in 1977, and a PhD in musicology in 1984 from the University of Canterbury. As a composer, he has composed and arranged well over 200 pieces including Footrot Flats and show more Love off the Shelf. As a writer, he compiled three editions of the Bibliography of New Zealand Compositions and wrote Douglas Lilburn: His Life and Music, which won the biography category in the 2007 Montana Book Awards. I may be prejudiced as I've met the author, but this is far and away one of the best musical biographies I've ever read and essential to the understanding of the most important New Zealand composer of the 20th century.
