Exciting novel of Michel de Fleury, who rises from serfdom through many obstacles and troubles, in high Middle Ages France--1183-1206--to become a well-respected salt merchant and mayor of the fictional city, Varennes-St. Jacques. He and other guild members achieve freedom from any spiritual or secular overlordship for their city. For a period of 30 some years he has dreamed of all citizens living in peace and in control of their own destiny. He has seen such in Italy, where he did his show more apprenticeship. I read in bits and pieces but the novel was hard to put down. I kept trying to guess what the author would do next with his characters but Herr Wolf fooled me every time by leading me down a road I didn't expect. I appreciated his notes through which I learned a little German history and who historically really lived and their importance. I understand there is a sequel which tells of Michel's son, a maker and illuminator of books. I want to read it.

Una novel.la d'aventures situada en una regió fictícia del centre d'Europa entre França i Alemanya i que ens situa en el segle XIV en el context de la pesta negra. L'obra té els seus bons moments, però en general, acaba desembocant en una histèria col.lectiva, que des del meu punt de vista, acaba sent poc creible.

Der historische Hintergrund von "Das Salz der Erde" ist sehr interessant: im Hochmittelalter versuchen Kaufleute ihre Interessen gegen geistliche und weltliche Macht durchzusetzen und sich gegen Willkür zu wehren. Die Hauptperson des Buches, der Kaufmann Michel de Fleury, wird über mehrere Jahrzehnte bei seinen Kämpfen und Erfolgen begleitet. Der historische Hintergrund ist spannend und gut dargestellt.
Titel und Aufmachung des Buches spielen auf Ken Folletts Klassiker "Die Säulen der show more Erde" an. In diesem Vergleich wird aber auch die Schwäche des Buches offenbar: anders als Follett gelingt es Daniel Wolf nicht, den Personen und der Handlung bis ins letzte Detail Tiefe zu geben. Meist sind Gute gut, Böse böse, da gibt es wenig Veränderung. Aber das Buch ist trotzdem gut: die Personen wachsen einem ans Herz, die Liebesgeschichte ist schön, die historische Handlung interessant.
Das ist ein wirklich schöner historischer Roman und eine gute Urlaubslektüre. show less
