Carter carefully tracks down the influences on Robert Graves' formulation of the White Goddess and the sources cited in the book of that name. He demonstrates the ways in which Graves selected translations and portions of works that supported his ideas while ignoring or downplaying those that did not. Carter also believes that Graves was influenced by Margaret Murray and by Gerald Gardner in his later editions of the work.
