Bachelor Japanists: Japanese Aesthetics and Western Masculinities (Modernist Latitudes) by Christopher Reed
"Japanists" are Western amateurs who responded to some aspects of Japanese culture, chiefly visual. "Bachelor Japanists" are unmarried male Japanists who found in Japanese culture an escape from heteronormative mores. This book looks at three cases in depth: the Goncourt Brothers in Paris, Ernest Fenollosa and the Bostonian cultural elite circa 1900, and the Seattle artist Mark Tobey.
The text is well-written and for the most part uncluttered with academic jargon. The case studies are show more thoughtfully examined, but I never felt that the author was forcing a thesis. A wonderful history of a recherche strand of aesthetic history. show less
