Without a Trace is an English translation of a German language book published in Switzerland in 1977. It was believed to be a product of the Rote Armee Fraktion, usually referred to as the Red Army Faction in English-language media.
Despite its age, this is my favorite introductory forensics book. It is very comprehensive, including overlooked topics such as gloveprints. The lack of any data on DNA isn’t as crippling as you would think, since information is provided on avoiding leaving show more traces from hair or bodily fluids. It has long been possible to identify people by biological traces, but was very difficult before DNA databases.
The information on electronic surveillance is out-of-date, of course. For the retro outlaw, there are great sections on avoiding being traced via your typewriter or off-set press.
