At first, the simple line drawings in this book might lead you to believe it is amateurish. But after a few pages, their directness and the subtlety of the figures' expressions will touch you. Even such simple illustrations can be artistic as well, such as the page with the boy sitting looking at his reflection in the water. The story is just as simple and effective. Sadness is natural; we all have it. What kids need isn't advice, it's compassion.

My Secret Dog by Tom Alexander is a delightful, engaging story about a little girl who tries to keep her pet a secret. You'll laugh out loud at her adorable antics, and be transported back to the simplicity of childhood. The black-and-white illustrations are what caught my attention in the first place, and they add a whimsical touch to the story. I'd recommend this book for any dog-loving child (or adult!).

This was such a cute story about a little girl who tries to secretly raise a dog at home. Loved the ending, the mom's demeanour and the moral explained in the story. Would highly recommend for children.
