After that humdinger of a cliffhanger in the last book, this one definitely lived up to the hype. Onyx awakens temporarily confused in a luxurious bedroom that she's not acquainted with. Moments later it all comes back to her; her FATHER is the King of the Winter Court!! Ever hear if something is too good to be true? Yup the same applies here. She might be safe temporarily, but Onyx quickly figured out that daddy dearest is using her for his own gain. Fine.... Two can play at this. While show more gaining much needed warrior skills and Intel on the enemy who purchased her, plus learning more about her sperm donor, Onyx bides her time to become stronger in every way. Who are friends, and who are foe? If she thought there were secrets, political intrigue and deceit around every corner at the Academy... That was child's play. As usual she's fighting for her life and that if those she holds dear. My bet is on Onyx running circles around daddy dearest and that evil jerk who purchased her at the academy. And it wouldn't be a true book in the series without a few shockers thrown in! Never a dull moment that's for certain! show less
I'm really enjoying this spin off from CRUEL ELITES series. In this book we are back with Virgie. It's now her turn to venture into the Summer Fae court. There she encounters both Peony and Kristen once again as she learns the ropes and finds her own possible romance. Virgie has a keen intellect and easily sees through their King. Can she convince others around her that he doesn't have everyone's best interest at heart? True to form there's tons of political intrigue, deception, and show more suspense... And one uber smart, canny, fierce female at the center of it all. It does end with a cliffhanger, and I for one can't wait for the next book in this exciting series! show less
Wow! Talk about a consistent adrenaline rush, suspense, and layers upon layers of lies and intrigue. Onyx is a half fae raised by her human mother. Growing up in a time where vampires lorded over the fae and used them as servants (if you were lucky), courtesan and far worse....suffice to say she knew from a very young age to hide her heritage. The very LAST thing she expected was to be betrayed by someone close to her and turned into the vampires. Thus landing her at Nocturna Academy where show more fae were trained for their future roles, and history was warped to fit the vampire narrative. Fortunately or unfortunately Onyx has a massive force of will and right vs wrong. Thus making her time at the Academy less than pleasant. She has to figure out what is going on with her magic, hiding the bizarre things happening to her from the fae....all the while desperately attempting to jump through all the books needed to just survive. Something is amiss, and Onyx is determined to save herself and the others. Are there any sympathetic vampires or are they all monsters?. Can she really make a difference? Can the far ever truly escape the thumb of the vampires? Onyx is getting quite the education at this academy, but I'm guessing the vampires have no clue it's only making her stronger. There are so many twists and turns along the way....I'm greatly looking forward to the next in this series. The prequel is available in the ACADEMY OF MAGIC box set which is now available. Get ready for one suspenseful adventure! show less
I was given this book by the author in exchange of an honest review, this is going to be exactly that, honest.
I found the writing very smooth and it swept me into the story. The characters were humane even though they are supernaturals. Well developed story. One this I found was that the culprit was predictable.
Spoilers****
I mean after the 2nd murder peter aka maxim was a major suspect for me. Also i found that his demise was build up nicely but the demise itself was abrupt. I mean seriously show more 2 blow to the head after all the precautions he had taken and all the intelligence he had shown, seemed like a really rushed end for him.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and would like to read on. show less
