Children will pore over this moody watercolor-soaked story of an introvert’s creative awakening, which contains within it a bright collage of weirdly wonderful dreams and nightmares, while adults will covet it as a work of art that speaks to their inner child. A picture book-graphic novel hybrid by the self-taught Argentine artist Guillermo Decurgez (known as Decur), translated by Chloe Garcia Roberts and also available in a Spanish-language edition, it begins on “moving day,” as a boy show more who believes the world exists only inside his cellphone finds a mysterious notebook in the secret compartment of a desk in his new room. show less
Unique in many ways with an tall format, mix of graphic novel and picture book, and variety of print types, this is a lovely story of a boy named Lorenzo who discovers the wonders of his imagination. With lots of "white space" on various colored pages, Decur leaves room for the reader's imagination. The old roll-top desk is a character in itself. I love how Lorenzo grows from screen-loving city boy to artistic country boy: "One his way home, Lorenzo decided to stop and res for a moment. He show more walked through the grass with bare feet and te=then sat down to draw. The mysterious with one eye stood guard over him like a warrior. Lorenzo felt like the most protected boy in the universe. The dog was surely his first friend in this new place..." He also creates stories within the story. Fun, just a touch of scary, and thoughtful. I recommend it for all ages (about six and up). show less
A great book to have discussions in class about. Really makes you think about the story and is a great read for students who are starting to learn or get a grip on Spanish. Not much writing but the illustrations are amazing.
