This book is an account of various figures' ideas on biological heredity from Darwin's "pangenesis" through the recognition in the 1940s that heredity must involve DNA somehow. It provides character sketches of many of the actors as well as assessments of their theories or research both in the context of their own time and in relation to current understanding. It keeps its focus almost entirely on scientific researchers and only briefly mentions the place of their ideas within wider social show more and political currents. show less
