Murky but atmospheric noir tale set in New York City and Hot Springs, Arkansas holds your attention with its fast-paced narrative and attitude - but puts the brakes on before the end and spends the last 21 pages (of a 152 pages of text) explaining how the private eye figured out who the killer was! This is the only novel Schoenfeld, a very interesting character, ever wrote. While intended as a send-up of the hardboiled genre, it isn't that different from a lot of novels that probably thought show more they were being serious. It is hard to send-up a genre that is to a significant extent composed on send-ups. show less
