Simon and Vic are home from their honeymoon, just in time for a brand new case! Mysterious missing person reports, a cursed motorcycle club, and an ancient entity add up to trouble.
Simon & Vic are married now but that certainly doesn't mean their paranormal adventures have come to an end. Throughout this thus far, 7-book series, we have seen the bonds form and strengthen for the Myrtle Beach police detective, Vic and the physic book-store owner, Simon. Their relationship has grown to be a show more strong defense against supernatural issues...and this time it's no different.

They have returned from their honeymoon in time for the Halloween season, and with that, they face another adversary; one that tests them and their paranormal friends, almost to their very limits. A troll is feeding on the residents in order to remain on this side of the physic plane and continue to carry out the ritual that keeps it alive. This was something that was put in place years ago between the creature and the area motorcycle club. Every year a club member would be sacrificed...but new members and a different "feel" has made the current club members say "enough"...they want the ritual to stop and be sent back to wherever it came from. All of Simon's witchy friends and all others with any physic abilities, join to help Simon to strength the bonds on the area lighthouses...bonds that will keep the troll from ever coming beyond those boundaries and will also cancel its pact for the yearly sacrifice with the club.

It seems that with each story that Simon & Vic's, bond deepens. It's beautiful to see how accepting Vic and all of Vic's co-workers at the police department have become of Simon's abilities. It enables Simon to have their support and their help whenever the need arises. With each story Morgan Brice gives us more history of South Carolina along with suspense/some chills, and lots of steamy scenes throughout.

I own nearly all of Morgan Brice's books, not just the ones in this series, but this one is my favorite, and I will always come back to this series as long she keeps this wonderful series going, which I am hoping that I will one day buy book #100 in the Badlands series.

Have you ever loved a series so much that you actually felt like going into mourning when you truly believe you may have read the last word you will ever read about characters that have taken a life of their own and come right off the pages? That's how I felt as I saw Simon, Vic, and Ross banish the pesky ghosts from the hotel and the house of the magician that held the spirits prisoner even after death...socialize with their friends...figure out how to keep Simon's toxic mother from show more attending the most important day of their lives...their wedding...and just being the guys that we, the fans, of this series have grown to love. I became "hooked" on Morgan Brice's series some time ago when I read the first book in her "Witchbane" series... from then on, I couldn't get enough. Then along came the first book in this, the "Badlands" series and it got me hooked even more...it is still my favorite series. There is always supernatural suspense and lots of romance in this and every story. Simon and Vic have to fight some nasty ghosts before they are able to get married...but everyone plays their part. Simon and Vic’s relationship, and Vic’s and his co-worker's (Vic's a detective), attitude towards the supernatural have come a long way since that first book. Ross,(Vic's work partner), and their Captain are now on board and eager to help. Simon and Vic grow so much more in their relationship in every book. Their scenes together are a wonderful mix of sweet and sexy. And those wedding vows, and ceremony...WOW! Simon now has a family that he is deserving of and loves him unconditionally since Vic’s mother has claimed him as one of her own. The crew from another of Morgan's series. "Trifles and Folly", one of them, Cassidy... is Simon's cousin, came in for the wedding, bringing their crew. One of them happened to be a 600-year-old vampire. He was well behaved and didn't bite a single guest...and even ate wedding cake:) I really hope that Morgan Brice will continue to give us more of Simon and Vic as a married couple. I own every book in every series, that Morgan Brice has ever written under this penname, so...if this is the end... I can see a lot of rereading in my future...but please, please, please...don't stop writing this series!! show less
I love Morgan Brice’s books and her characters. I’ve read her “Witchbane” and “Badlands” series at least 5 times since I discovered her work, and I will more than likely read her “Treasure Trail” series as many times or more. The concept of this series is excellent, as usual...but some of the things that I found a little annoying here was the use of some of the frequent flashbacks to the past between Dawson and Grady. They became distracting and I began to find them even show more boring at times since the information was given again later, and sometimes more than once. The characters of Dawson and Grady are sexy as all get out...as we would expect...but the distress that Dawson put Grady through saying that he's trying not to push him too fast was a little hard to understand. Grady had spent 4 long, miserable years waiting for Dawson, who knew what their feelings were for one another but made the choice to join the army and go on what amounted to a suicide mission anyway. I felt that Dawson’s “waiting” was more for himself than it was for Grady. I found myself thinking as I read, that the entire story could have used a little more pulling together. I have never encountered this before in any of Morgan Brice’s books, and I have never given anything that I have read that she has written less than 5 stars. I’m going to continue this series...but I hope that the things that bothered me about this, the first book in this series, is just a “first time fluke”. I really, really, really enjoy this author and will certainly move along to the next book in the series. show less
Morgan Brice is one a few authors that I have said could write manuals for installing toilets and I would read every word and anxiously wait for the sequel. This lady just cannot write a bad story or invent characters that are not lovable, interesting, and stimulating. Vic and Simon are just perfect! What I also love about her books is that after you are attached to the characters and even if a new series begins, she allows all of the characters from the other series to become friends, to show more communicate, and visit frequently with one another so we never lose track of them. This is my sixth reread of the "Badlands" series and I plan to do many, many more. The action and the suspense is so worth the reread and especially seeing the growing love and connection between Vic and Simon only added to it. We got to meet Simon's ex an saw more of Vic's big mistake also. I hope Morgan Brice plans at least another hundred installments of this series. She can also add another hundred to the "Witchbane" series while she's at it. show less
