A little dated (published in 1986) but still quite fascinating and lots of good quality pictures. In fact, I was amazed at how advanced some of the material was (Bird song recordings for example). It's not really the sort of book one should read cover to cover because it lacks any coherent thread running through the subjects> But I DID read from cover to cover....though equally could have just delved into it in a casual fashion and read an article about beavers or how the woodpecker's brain show more with stands the constant pounding. I guess, that I was familiar with about 90% of the material but there were many things there that were either totally new to me or there were new wrinkles on things that I thought I knew. So quite enjoyed reading it. Four stars from me because it's now a bit dated and I'm sure that there is a lot of knew knowledge ...plus modern printing techniques are so much better. show less
