Asimo, PaPeRo, Curiosity, Justin, Cheetah... All those famous robots and more are here waiting to be discovered, in this very lively and brilliant book. Beautiful lay-up, with very colourful and straightforward pictures, here's indeed a fantastic start to introduce robotics to children! Stressing their wide and various functions, it also ends in a great way -asking how 'human' robots can be. Well, there's a few downsides. For instance, I don't why the concept of AI is not introduced (since show more it's such a clever book) and, I was surprised to find mention of the karakuri dolls albeit nothing on Europeans automatons BUT, this is such an intelligent, relevant and exciting book (it really triggered the imagination of my 7 years old boy) that, I warmly recommend it. show less
Though this is a well-made and chock-full-o'-facts little brick of a book, the word "Geography" in the title is very misleading. The text has more to do with a region's geopolitics and history than with physical geography. And many of the photos are of things like the inside of a house of worship or an ancient man-made relic. In typical leftist fashion, America is excoriated for its brief (~240 years) experiment with slavery while other more melanin-rich countries receive a pass for show more thousands of years of slavery. And the final sentence about Russia ominously states that its quality of life is decreasing. (Translation: It's becoming more of a capitalist, Western-style country.) Overall, a bit of a failed effort, albeit fun to flip through for capsule summaries of the world's nations if you know how to filter out bias. show less
This really is aimed at around age 10 and above - - not a massively comprehensive encyclopedia - - and all the better for it if the intention is to browse to find basic, core facts/details of a person or event across the entire globe. It also has that indefinable pleasure of 'dipping' into topics one knows little or nothing about: The antidote to the relentless lists on google and other alleged search engine which leave you none the wiser as to have you accessed the site you really need or show more must return to look again at the list. show less
This authoritative reference book brings world history to life, from early humans to the current war on terror. Along the way, it reveals riveting facts on the founding of the great Roman Empire, the revolution that changed France forever, the war between the North and South that unified America, the start of World War I and the Great Depression that followed, the first moon landing, and the end of apartheid in South Africa. The encyclopedia is organized chronologically and then thematically show more within each time period. A timeline runs across the top of each page. Each section includes biographies of important people and features on art, architecture, and technology. show less
