Let's Go, Construction Trucks! (Spin Me!) by Scholastic

First sentence: I move dirt from place to place. I can clear out any space! I am a dump truck. Make my wheels spin. Let construction begin!

Premise/plot: A [mostly] rhyming construction-themed book for young(er) readers. This one has the repetitive refrain: Make my wheels spin. Let construction begin!

My thoughts: I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the interactive show more element in this one. Will every young child? Maybe. Maybe not. But if your little one does happen to think it is the greatest thing ever, then the catchy narrative is a bonus.

I found the interactive element mesmerizing (in a good way, I think). Definitely recommended.

Hogwarts: A Cinematic Yearbook (Harry Potter) by Scholastic

You all know I love me some Harry Potter books, but do we need to have every single idea actually made real? This book markets itself as a cinematic yearbook, taking readers through their first year at Hogwarts with a variety of activities to complete from drawing magical creatures to writing a howler. The concept itself isn’t terrible (what kid doesn’t like activity books and expanding a favoured created universe in their own style), but do we need half of the pages taken up by show more screencaps from the film? A few carefully placed graphics to guide readers would have been more than enough, since you know if readers are buying this book in the first place that they’re already experts on the Harry Potter Wizarding World… And for those of us who are collectors, the hardcover volume doesn’t exactly lend itself to the creative and slightly careless nature of regular activity books, so we’re pretty unlikely to actually mar its pages. show less

Let's Go, Rescue Trucks! (Spin Me!) by Scholastic

{My thoughts} – Rescue vehicles are always the most exciting to see for a child. They light up and make many sounds. This book has a nice little sentence on each page about the emergency vehicle and then on the next page it tells the child to spin the wheels. The book has wheels that are similar to gears. The child spins one and the one next to it spins right along with it. It is extremely neat how it is put together.

I showed this book to my two year old daughter and she loved it. She kept show more brining it back to me wanting me to keep reading it. It’s always cute when she brings a book to us and says “book read.”

The illustrations in this book match the words nicely. The fact that the wheels move like gears is an added bonus to how nice this book truly is. If you have a child that loves books that have things to do within the pages, this book is definitely for you and your child! show less

Happy Howliday Book (Artlist Collection: The Dog) by Scholastic Inc.

Disregarding all the cute doggy photos, this is a very generic book about holiday traditions, with a main focus is on Christmas. Even though the opening page mentions Kwanzaa and Hanukkah there are no pages with dogs telling about traditions tied to those holidays, instead the book skips ahead to New Year's and even Chinese New Year, which can happen anywhere from late January to late February.

The best pages had a dog from associated with a particular country talking about specific show more traditions from that country, but there were only about ten of those in the midst of random stuff like activities, recipes, and puzzles. show less
