Hiromu Arakawa, or Hiromi Arakawa, is a female manga artist that had written many series and standalone manga. She is best known for writing Fullmetal Alchemist, a shounen manga series that is well known worldwide and has been adapted into an anime twice.
Arakawa was born on May 8, 1973 in Makubetsu, Hokkaido and was raised on a dairy farm with three elder sisters and a younger brother. In her childhood, Arakawa expressed her interest in being a manga artist and would move to Tokyo in the year 1999 to work in the manga industry. When she published her first authentic manga piece, Stray Dog, Arakawa had used her now famous pen name “Hiromu Arakawa” instead of her real name Hiromi Arakawa. The reason why Arakawa had chosen a male pseudonym is because she intends to write shounen genre manga, which are high stake action series that are mainly intended for adolescent boys. Women in the manga industry were usually expected to write shojo manga, a more female intended manga that is less action and more emotion.
Within the next two decades, Arakawa would make many other manga pieces that are mostly within the shounen genre but is now currently writing her continuing series called Silver Spoon, a manga about a young man learning about the intricacies of the agricultural industry. Outside of her job as a manga artist, Arakawa is currently still living in Tokyo with her husband and their three children. - Nationality

I was seriously shocked at how good this was, considering that I was expecting Steampunk Naruto. Fantastic characters, great worldbuilding, and a surprisingly nuanced approach to criticizing the military and the cycle of revenge and bigotry. I feel like I missed the prime window to enjoy this series in middle school, but overall I'm really happy I finally got around to reading it.
This series breaks through to a new level as it finds the right mix of humor, romance and drama while staying true to its roots to showcase and educate about rural life. The school festival is underway, a date is taken at a local shrine, and a baseball tournament leads to an unexpected cliffhanger. I know I have it on hold, but where's the next volume already?!?!
Also, the author has my permission to draw an entire volume of nothing but draft horses pulling heavy ass stuff anywhere they damn show more well want. Soon, please! show less

Arakawa keeps introducing a slew of new characters every volume, but fortunately she keeps killing off the old ones so I don't feel overwhelmed. At least one of those deaths is pretty rough though as the bad guys become increasingly ruthless. Balanced against all the slapstick in other sections, this series is seeming more like a Coen Brothers movie each volume.
After 15 volumes of hijinks, I was expecting a big splashy ending, but this mellow and indirect take -- more denouement than finale -- is wholly earned and satisfactory as Yuugo Hackiken graduates from Ooezo Agricultural High School in Hokkaido, Japan, a changed man. Back in Vol. 1, he escaped to an ag school to run away from the intense academic track he was on and his even more intense father. Now he is running toward dreams and even inspiring others to chase after him.
Great series!
