Pilgrimage to Paris: The Cheapo Snob's Guide to the City and the Americans Who Lived There by Jayne Boisvert
Pilgrimage to Paris is a charming hybrid of travel guide, cultural primer, and literary stroll through the City of Light. Jayne R. Boisvert writes with the enthusiasm of someone who genuinely wants travelers—especially budget‑minded ones—to experience Paris without feeling priced out or overwhelmed. The “cheapo snob” angle is fun: she champions affordable cafés, modest hotels, and free or low‑cost attractions, yet she never skimps on the cultural richness that makes Paris show more irresistible.
One of the book’s strengths is how it blends practical advice with historical and biographical sketches of the Americans who shaped Paris’s artistic identity. Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, James Baldwin, Josephine Baker—Boisvert weaves their stories into walking routes and neighborhood explorations, giving readers a sense of place that goes beyond typical guidebooks.
The tone is warm, accessible, and encouraging. It’s not trying to be exhaustive; instead, it feels like a knowledgeable friend showing you her favorite corners of the city. Travelers who enjoy literary history or who want a curated, budget‑friendly introduction to Paris will find this especially appealing. show less

Early Reviewer Book. Not your average travel guide. Good information at the beginning about what to see and do in Paris. Then transitioning into writers and artists who have lived in Paris. Lots of facts about where they hung out and with whom. Interesting read.

A great field guide to visiting Paris. Some intro chapters about how to get around, etc. Several chapters on Americans who have lived in Paris, and how to find their homes and favorite haunts. Great info.

Accessible travel guide. It covers the basics well (how to get around, hotels, locations), and how to get into the best sites. Not just the famous and expensive but the not well known and the inexpensive. I appreciate the list of places to bring your own meal, sit and enjoy the city. The list of famous Americans was interesting, especially how their favorite locations tended to overlap so much. I am going to go back and take notes the next read.
