Hadley runs her family’s bakery; copes with the demon who periodically possesses her youngest sister; and tries not to miss Edric, the boyfriend she drove away from her dangerous life. But now her sister’s demon is gloating over a disaster it foresees, Edric is back demanding answers, and she’s burned her first cake ever. Is her witchy magic enough to keep her and her loved ones safe?

As one of several sisters, I could relate to Hadley’s complex relationship with her family. As the show more oldest, she feels responsible for her family’s safety. But as the looming danger to her sisters and to the entire town expands, Hadley’s guilt-inducing worry that she cannot protect them threatens to spiral out of control. The author avoids making Hadley a martyr, though, by also giving her a steamy romance with a supportive boyfriend.

Hadley grows as a person, and the plot arrives at a satisfying resolution. Still, enough questions remain unanswered to entice the reader to check out the second book in the series.

The quality of writing is good, even really good. The plot hangs together well enough and the suspension of belief is not over the top. So why have I given it 2 stars? Because I disagree with making the demonic and the supernatural, specifically the evil part of the supernatural into something that seems sort of cozy, sexy, fun. The pair of protagonists both have a history of abuse which tends to make them sympathetic. At least, I hope that abuse victims get a sympathetic vibe out of the show more person who meets them. But, the big issue for me is that making the devil sympathetic is hugely wrong on many levels.
There are other stories that go against my beliefs, the core of who I am in other ways, but I refuse to read more of this for that one reason.

If you like the magical realm, I suggest Artemis Fowl books, Harry Potter books (although that rubs up against the edges of acceptable for me too...for the same reason as here, but most of the evil personages there are recognizably evil so...) any ways, 'nuff said.

Got this book free on Amazon. I'm glad I decided to read new books to me this month because I've come up with some really good reads. This one is definitely on top.

This book is about a bounty hunter named Mercy, she gets a bounty that is going to pay a high amount, well she comes across a demon named Raphael. And an interesting pairing comes to light.

What I love about this book, is that it's super easy to get into, and honestly, I did not want to put it down, two the heroine and main male show more didn't instantly get into the sack. They're building up into something, what it will become will be fun to read. But the best part is that they both have some kind of history that they tend to keep on the back burner, and I love how you find little details here and there.

I cannot wait to read the next in the series.
