و تستطيع بالعين المجردة ان تعرف الفرق فانت لست مجرد متفرج او متابع للاحداث بل جزء لا يتجزء من هذا العالم المختلف..و انت لا تستطيع تحسين او تطوير حياة الشودافى و اخوانه كما تمنت عائلة الناجى فجل ما تستطيع عمله هو ان تنصهر وسط هذا العالم الاسطورى لتقع فى حباله للابد

بين أميات نجيب سرور و وكالة عطية خيرى شلبى...هناك تشابه

كلاهما فى رأيى قرر ان يصدم القارئ المنعم على كرسى مريح فى اضاءة مريحة للعينين بما فى بلدنا الذى لا نعلم عنه سوى ما تنقله لنا الاذاعات ...و لتسمع تلك المفردات و "الحركات الصوتية" التى تشكل عالم لا تجرؤ على دخوله

لا استطيع ان اتخيل ان كل ما قرأت هو فقط من بنات خيال عمنا خيرى شلبى فمن اين له بكل هذا الكم من التفاصيل و الحكايا و الدقائق و طرق السرقة المبتكرة و شغل النور و الحلب و الغجر بذكات يجلب مئات الجنيهات فى لحظات و يذهب سنوات العمر فى السجن ايضا فى لحظات

و مع بطلنا الذى لم يصرح لنا شلبى باسمه فيظل "فلان" او "يا اخ" نطل على هذا العالم المتشابك الممتع
لتسمع حكايا و قصص اقوى من الف ليلة و ليله و مغامرات سيف بن ذى يزن و لا تقل حقيقة عن كف يديك

و اظل افكر كيف وصل خيرى شلبى لكل تلك التفاصيل؟؟ فتلك ليست كتابات كاتب يكتب فى ظل مكتب مريح و سيجارة و كوب شاى مظبوط بل كاتب يكتب من عرق الشارع و بالشارع

خيرى شلبى و اخوان عصر ناصر

فى قلب قصص دميانه و الشوادفى و زناتى و مسالك وكالة عطية يلقى قنبلة سياسية ...انها تلك القصة الخالدة عن ناصر و اخوان البنا

و يتنبى خيرى شلبى موقف المناهض لحركات الاعتقالات بل و يخبرنا من سياق موقف درامى ممتع ان الشعب قد تعاطف من الاخوان كراهيه لنظام رأى فيه ظلم غير مبرر ..و كم اتمنى ان يكون خيرى شلبى بيننا الان لاستمع الى رأيه فى المحنه الثانية

لكن الشودافى -و ما ادراك ما الشودافى- يضيف رأى خاص به فى الاخوان ليكون امثولة عبر الزمن





و من هنا اتساءل عن موقف قرد دميانه من هذا التصنيف؟

This book had an immersive setting, with lots of details which made me feel like I was really in Egypt. However, that combined with the slow pace of the plot made a lot of it boring and hard to get through. There were some interesting characters and scenes I really liked but ultimately, I found most of it dull and unengaging. If you don't mind a slow paced book, you might like it, but otherwise I wouldn't recommend it.

The Time Travels of the Man Who Sold Pickles and Sweets by Khairy Shalaby tells the story of Ibn Shalaby, an ordinary modern-day Egyptian man who can travel through time. He has no control over when he is thrown into the past or the future; instead, he must consult his wristwatch to find out what year it is.

In his travels throughout the Fatimid, Ayyubid and Mamluk eras and his meanderings around Cairo, Ibn Shalaby meets many rulers, historians and other famous people. His real adventures show more take off when he presents a cassette recorder to a Fatimid caliph, who of course has never seen such an advanced device before. Unfortunately, the recorder fails to function, angering the caliph and his assistants.

Originally published in Arabic in 1991, the novel was translated into English in 2010 by Michael Cooperson. At parts, the writing style seems stilted and verbose, probably because the translator stayed very close to the original Arabic text. The translator’s afterword is worth a read as it explains the difficult decisions that the translator had to make in order to keep the translation faithful to the original while making it appealing to English readers.

The Time Travels of the Man Who Sold Pickles and Sweets is not really a historical novel, despite what you might expect from the book’s premise. Instead, it is a fantastical and surreal story. The novel can be disorientating as new characters constantly appear and disappear, and Ibn Shalaby bounces through time and space without warning. The story is not particularly gripping; and The Time Travels requires careful, thoughtful reading in order to pick up on the subtleties.

Perhaps the best part of the novel is the main character, Ibn Shalaby. He is constantly surrounded by chaos but manages to observe all the details in his surroundings. He is a witty, amusing character who repeatedly confuses historical figures by mentioning modern-day phenomena such as pharmaceuticals and electronics. Ibn Shalaby’s humour and clever jabs make parts of The Time Travels a joy to read.

On the whole, the story can be disjointed and confusing; although this could have been the author’s intention. One of the book’s most central ideas – time travel – was not emphasised as much as it could have been. Though it can be difficult to become engrossed in this book, The Time Travels is recommended to the more persistent readers.
