Heartbroken: A Pride and Prejudice Variation (The "What If?" Modern Darcy and Elizabeth Series, #1) by Laura Moretti
At times funny, at times heartbreaking and at times maddening (at a character that is).
Despite this being a modern P&P variation, the characterization of Darcy and Elizabeth are closer to what I image they actually were in canon:
- both somewhat emotionally damaged
- Darcy as shy, awkward, suffering from foot'n-mouth, high standards - but mostly for himself
- Elizabeth as more deliberately cruel (even if she disguises it at times), immature and a little obtuse/prejudiced to begin with. I've show more always seen her as needing to grow more than canon depicted or glossed over. Not so here.
I liked it - seeing her becoming more introspective and self-aware; her needing to grow/mature more to overcome her faults than Darcy his. At least I hope that's what the author was aiming for (or perhaps I'm just projecting *my* prejudices).
This was quirky, well paced and gave more depth to ODC and a more believable path to their finally coming together.

Ten Valentine's Days: A Pride and Prejudice Variation (The "What If?" Modern Darcy and Elizabeth Series) by Laura Moretti
I know that I've read this before and liked it. Finally I found it. It's in this collection With Love, Mr Darcy: A Pride and Prejudice Valentine Short Story Collection. I thought I was losing my mind! ;)
Steadfast Darcy as ever. Although a bit of a chicken. Elizabeth finally screws up her courage (after a little matchmaking from maybe Jane? maybe her nephew/godson?)
It was very sweet and left a smile on my face. (Sometimes Laura Moretti's stories are a little more angst filled, or with a... show more shall we say... difficult Elizabeth - this was not one of those.) show less
