I was surprised when I read this. I thought this was going to be an informational book about a pony who only had one leg but it was so much more than that. The story begins with how it all happened. It discusses the pony being abandoned and how it got a new family and then how it's foot had to be amputated after an infection from a dog bite. The horse receives a prosthetic leg and has a smiley face on the bottom of it so whenever she walks a smile is left in the ground. This horse is show more inspiring. The owner allowed other children who were sick or had special needs to play with the horse. I think this book is sweet and can inspire people. show less
Molly the Pony tells the tale of a pony who survived after being abandoned during Hurricane Katrina. At her new home, a dog bites her leg and it needs to be amputated. They fit her with a prosthetic leg and she soon becomes a therapy pony, visiting children's hospitals and nursing homes. The story is heartwarming, but the design of the book is lacking. It would be a good book to read in addition to other books discussing disabilities, as it has local interest and is non-fiction. I would not show more use it as a stand-alone read-aloud. show less
Very touching and wonderful story about a rescued pony, who was left alone in hurricane Katrina and was later rescued by a group of awesome people. Not only that, but even after losing her limb she kept going strong. This book made me realize something very important, not just humans can give hope and cheer, but so do animals. This will be a great read for young students during ELA class.
Molly is an inspirational horse who was rescued from a damaged barn two weeks after Hurricane Katrina. She finds a new home with an owner who takes very good care of her and other horse friends. As if Molly had not been through enough hardships, she was badly bitten on a front leg by a large dog while in the pasture. Veterinarians decide that Molly should receive a prosthetic leg in order for her to regain her health. Molly courageously adapted to her new leg. Once Molly was feeling back to show more her old self she began to visit children’s hospitals and retirement homes. She was great with people and her special job brought joy to everyone she met. This book is spewing with optimism and would be a great read to encourage exposure and acceptance towards anyone who is challenged physically. The fact that this story is true and local will engage children. The photographs help readers connect to Molly’s factual and valiant story. show less
