There is a fun, quirky type of humor here that I enjoyed. The expressions and dialogue are funny too. The mom stood out to me because she’s a hard-as-nails type, but it wasn’t entirely black or white. It’s obvious she’s too tough on her daughter, but she’s not a villain either. I’m sorry, but she was entertaining though from a child’s perspective she’s a prison warden.

Bay Ann has cerebral palsy (and she jokes very flippantly about it), and it’s a constant factor of her show more life. She wonders if her talent for dance is genuinely well-liked or out of pity from others. Of course, most of the characters affirm her, but some do look down upon her.

I think the story strikes a realistic balance that will be relatable to kids in general but especially those with physical disabilities. Some people will look at you differently or be condescending or overly helpful and others will not care at all. In particular, Bay Ann’s friends are just as chaotic and sweet as herself.

Also, there is a random magical-talking cat character that the story narrative barely acknowledges. AND I LOVE THAT as a magical realism fan. It could be a figment of Bay Ann’s imagination or a legit talking cat. I don’t know, man but it was good time.

Bay Ann, ambitious dancer with two amazing friends, divorced parents and a talking cat, gets hyper competitive with classmate Alyee Maq. Love that her CP doesn’t limit her ambitions, even when other people's reactions frustrate her. Love that the adults in this book are portrayed realistically -- challenging parental relationships, a teacher who is not a pushover. Love the friendships. Did not love the obsession with social media, but the messages around it are ultimately good, and it's a show more realistic depiction of current childhood. Very cool to have an author with lived experience, and a great sense of humor. show less
I found this book a very challenging read. Bay Ann, the main character, is so unlikable with her self-absorption and the many toxic relationships she's involved in. Can you say emotional abuse? I'm sure some will give the author a pass because she, like the main character, has cerebral palsy but her portrayal of Bay Ann is negative in this light as well. She's constantly playing the "disability card" and seeking excuses for her shocking behaviour and attitudes towards others. In short, a show more difficult read, full of exaggerated, stereotypical, and unlikable characters. show less
Bay Ann is obsessed with going viral on social media. The only time she went viral was not on her terms: A video clip of her being kissed and saved from falling by her crush and nemesis Alyee Maq shows her face as pixilated. Bay Ann then loses the Science Fair and Classroom Clash to Alyee before her cat Lucy suggests if she can't beat him, join him. Bay Ann's dogged pursuit of fame will soon cause a rift with her best friend Michelle. Bay Ann is lively and persistent in this funny cautionary show more tale of seeking internet fame for its own sake. show less
