In the extraordinarily personal style we have come to expect from McKenna, the reader sees Mary as never before, through the scriptures, and through the meditations on her life and meaning for Christians today. McKenna's reflections begin with the story of Our Lady of Guadelupe and end with the watch at Calvary.
The Gospel of Mathew recounts the feeding of the crowd of five thousand, “not counting women and children.” McKenna muses that there could have been as many as five or six women and children for every man – an enormous number to go uncounted! Who were they? And what of the leftovers – who gathered them? who brought the twelve baskets that were filled? Who took them home?

As Not Counting Women and Children shows, when ordinary people studying the bible begin to discuss questions such show more as these, the results can be stunning and heart-changing. show less
Through scripture and stories from diverse traditions including the gospel narratives, Jewish midrash, Hassidic tales, Native American oral traditions, and others, theologian Megan McKenna presents insights on–and practices in–forgiveness, reconciliation, restorative justice, healing from trauma, and participation in “repairing the world.”
Beginning with Hebrew and Christian scriptures and enriched by traditions the world over, McKenna gives substance and depth to these now familiar figures.
