The two volume Bible History References written by F. Ruppert is an extremely helpful reference. Volume one contains historical, social, geographical, archaeological and doctrinal notes as well as charts, illustrations and maps that will aid in understanding the Old Testament. Volume two contains the same type of information for the New Testament. For example in volume two there is a picture of a foot lamp used by the ancients at night. I, personally, find this to be a most interesting book with wonderful insights into scripture. It is not the most indepth history one man find, however, the commentary on what is discussed is actually quite excellent, though plainly stated so as to allow comprehension by even the basic of readers. I only wish I had Vol. 1 to go along with it.
