OK, truthfully I thought this was another lousy, mind over body, heal yourself well, self-help book. The techniques presented were fairly basic principles to me. Then I realized to other, it might not be. Dr. Gilbert used several styles of "mental" processes to help patients step away enough from the situation to look at it sensibly. Some of the ideas may seem silly (with illustrations that add to this feeling!) but once embarked upon, help one to see things not noticed before. I know, show more sounds easy but then why are we not already trying this? Because we get too close to the issues that we take it too personally to let go. Sometimes the original issue was something else entirely that dragged us into the currents problem. A pretty good book to remind us how the healing process is more complex but manageable if we are wiling to try. ** DISCLAIMER: I won this in a GOODREAD giveaway.* show less
I am closely related to the authors, which, in fact that is the only reason I own this book. Chris is a very observant person who really does understand what makes people tick and the book is clearly in her familiar voice. That voice struck me as unusual for a book discussing alternative treatments for medical problems, but I haven't read much at all in that area. The straightforwardness of the cases she discusses and the seeming quickness of the symptom release seem vastly unlikely, but I show more assume are somewhat more illustrative than realistic. As for the advice, it seems reasonable and unlikely to do any harm, except the screaming - screaming really tears up my throat. show less
