It is the researcher’s goal to create and support a local music community
through a “Rock summer seminar” for students. This seminar designed and
implemented for a six week summer course will teach rock music to adolescents.
Students will learn the origin of rock music as well as how the culture and
history of society was reflected and influenced by this American art form.
Students will understand how artists use literary devices to create meaning in
their music. The important role of show more technology as it relates to popular music will
be discussed as students discover how sound is manipulated and sold to the
public. While listening to a wide range of rock and roll, students will realize the
abundant connections that exist between popular music and the more traditional
realms of music being taught in the educational system. Adolescents will acquire
critical listening skills and basic compositional techniques, while rehearsing to
perform in front of an audience. Most importantly, healthy interpersonal growth
will hopefully transpire among the adolescent students as they work together as
a band and as a class towards a common goal. show less
