Star of India - Short biography
- Ferdinand de Lesseps was a French diplomat and developer of the Suez Canal in Egypt, which in 1869 joined the Mediterranean and Red Seas, which revolutionized world travel by reducing the sailing distance and time between Europe and East Asia. Although he also tried and failed to build a Panama Canal, he was honored by being named a member of the Académie française and of numerous scientific societies, and decorated with the Legion of Honor.
