"Second Star to the Left" will transport you to a magical Neverland with exciting twists and charming characters. Megan Van Dyke revives familiar characters, transforming Tinker Bell into a spirited yet homesick fairy, and Captain Hook into a charming yet cunning figure.
The writing is smooth and well paced. Some twists you could see coming, while others were a total surprise. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of a feud, curses, and an unexpected shared quest, compelling Tink and show more Hook to set aside their differences in pursuit of a common goal. The chemistry between them crackles with tension, igniting an irresistible enemies-to-lovers romance that pulses with conflict and passion. Van Dyke balances these intense moments with tender, heartfelt scenes that deepen the emotional resonance of the story.
Peter Pan and the lost children play minor roles, which was surprising, as I expected to see more of them. But this would work well for Peter Pan as an origin story.
The dynamic between Tink and Hook is the heart of the tale, driving the narrative forward with its blend of adventure, humor, and suspense. Oh, and by the way, Tink is human size in this story, in case you’re wondering how this pairing could possibly work. But it’s not just about Tink and Hook. The whole ensemble cast is fleshed out so well. From the crew of the Jolly Roger to the merfolk, everyone’s got their own story to tell.

Really clever, enjoyed this a lot. It is nominally 2nd in a series, but the first was a Peter Pan riff, and this is a completely different Fairy Tale, obviously Cinderella, but with many others thrown in, especially Sleeping Beauty and Snow White.
We all know Cinderella, and how the poor daughter was picked on by her nasty step-mum and terrible step-sisters until the wonderful prince swept her away to live happily ever after. All Lies. Ella was the evil one, picking on her siblings, and she show more stole the Prince from under Anna's nose. Now the whole country is enslaved to her whim and her magical compulsions, apart from Anna and a few staunch rebels that she meets. One of whom is the daringly attractive Will, but with Anna disguised as a man, she can't let her feelings show.
A little bit overly romantic (and graphical) for me in places, but good fun throughout, enjoy picking out the various other Fairy Tale devices as they enter the story. show less

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. This is the kind of dark, dystopian fantasy I could read all the time. Ilya is smart, tough, but also vulnerable. When the evil emperor captures her city state, she's taken from her palace as a 'guest', but is really a hostage to force her mother the queen, to toe the line.
At first she focuses all her rage at Lucien, one of the mad emperor's captains, but he has his own inner demons and the longer they're together, the stronger their attraction becomes. There's evil, cruelty, treachery, show more bravery and romance, all mixed so very well. show less
