Wow!

OK, I need to start by saying that I read this in German translation. This is what was available to me. Many times I wished to be able to refer to the English original. A lot of the book turns on the meanings of similar words, and it would have been nice to know which words the author was really talking about. Occasionally the translator had to rewrite a paragraph because the German just didn't do what the English did. I welcomed these sections for making the relationship between the show more original and translation more transparent. The translator is to be congratulated on making a readable book.

In essence, this book is a defense of religion. Not any particular religion, but that humanity requires religion. Most of his examples are taken from Buddhism, and the examples from (Judeo-)Christianity make it clear that his Biblical knowledge is mostly second hand. The Epilogue makes a strong case for standing together to defend the witness of mystics throughout the world and the ages that there is more than just the material world, and that we need to attend to those other dimensions to be holy and whole.
