Wonderful little coffee table book with hundreds of pictures of "Painted Ladies" in San Francisco. Book came out in 1978 and was just at the start of the painted lady movement, well for those of us in the mid-west. I remember reading this in the 80's and being awed by the architecture and how the paint schemes highlighted the different details. Was no less awed now then I was back then. Just out of interest I googled several of the houses featured, all are still there but most the paint show more schemes are much more subdued and tress that are mere twigs in the book now are 30 feet tall. Great book if you like Victorian architecture. show less
As of today, this is a 15 years old book.
I know many of the listed places, so I could make my opinion. True, a good portion of the information is outdated - but the list stays pretty accurate, and with a simple google search, the new information is seconds away (updated fares, updated hours of operation etc).

The classification and ordering of the activities is still relevant, and makes an easy "check the bucket list" support. The ages recommended are somewhat accurate, and you'll need to show more adjust to the liking of your children - as it's pretty conservative.

Worth keeping? no. Worth using? yes, today!

Follow up to the first painted ladies book that was all about San Francisco. This one is a decade later and features from around the country. Most are interesting houses but paint schemes are a lot more subdued than in the original. Also author seems to be off on some of heir house descriptions in regards to types etc. Photos are nice but not as good as first. Broad shots of houses to get the full 2-3-4 stories into frame and then others that are close ups. Good overall but seems to be not show more as inspired or author and photographer were overwhelmed with the enormity of the whole nation. show less
Gorgeous, gorgeous book!
The photos are amazing as are all of the houses in it. If you enjoy architecture or big, fancy houses - take a look! :)
