This was an absorbing fantasy with a good coming-of-age plot. I liked the main character's differences from the norm. The characters were developed well enough to keep me invested in them, but not so much that the pace suffered. I liked the balance. The writing was good and the creatures and plot were interesting. Although this is a first in a series, this book works well as a stand-alone.
Excellent characters and world imagining; but they all speak contemporary American.
