Relying on the archaeological discoveries in what was the ancient Macedon alongside the written histories, this book looks at how Macedon grew and developed under Philip and how that in turn shaped Alexander. As the title suggests, this book focuses on Alexander's youth, ending at the point where he crosses over to Asia. The later years are only covered quickly in the epilogue.
