Although this books seems like a retelling of the European story of Cinderella, this story has actually been apart of India's history for over 1000 years. This is one reason why it is an excellent example of traditional literature, but is different than the usual European stories that children often hear in the United States. The setting in this story was extremely crucial to understanding the plot of the story and everything that took place. The very details of the story line were set to show more match life in India. (Such as the anklet instead of the glass slipper) This would be an excellent rendition of the usual Cinderella story to read to use in the classroom. Students can read different Cinderella stories from around the world, create their own Cinderella stories, or even produce an artwork that encompassed the beautiful bright colors in the book.

This was a great way to tell a story like Cinderella but with a different culture. It will widen students views on other cultures.
Cinduri, Indian version of Cinderella, is mistreated by her stepmother and stepsister. A snake is her godfather. She leaves behind an ankle bracelet, which the visiting prince uses to find his princess.
