this was really fun. all of these rich people pitted against each other and all with motives to harm each other. but also all playing tennis together and going to the beach together as if everything is fine. it's a look into the rich summer set but allows all the yuck to seep into it, which makes this really fun. and it's well written.
I stayed up late to finish this and don't regret it at all...
This is the definition of a 'summer beach read', so much fun, so juicy and full of drama! 99% of these characters are terrible people and the ones that aren't, aren't quite as interesting. Pick it up and be prepared to be sucked into the problems of the rich and privileged and those in their orbit.
Touted as a great summer read, Bad Summer People is a novel about garbage people doing garbage things to each other. This ultimately made me feel a bit stupid for reading it all the way through. The writer clearly had a hoot writing it, and says as much in the end acknowledgements, but it wasn’t as much fun reading it. Malicious, shitty people with too much time and money on their hands. Well, time to play tennis and shit-talk each other.
If you are looking for a novel where everyone sleeps with people that aren't their spouse, and are just despicable people - this is the novel for you. I suppose that with a title "Bad Summer People" that was to be expected, but there was not one person in this novel with any redeeming quality. There were gossips, cheats, adulterers, and murderers.
As wealthy NY families make their way to Fire Island for the summer, they play tennis and they have sex. Then someone gets killed. Who did it? You show more may be surprised. show less
