Short biography
[from The Times-Standard retirement announcement]
Jones came to Humboldt State in 1968, joining the Department of History where he introduced courses in European social and intellectual history. From 1972 until its cancellation in 1980, Jones served on the faculty of the Innovative Cluster Program, a student-centered, team-taught interdisciplinary program intended to provide students with an alternative to the traditional General Education program.

From 1981 to 1994, he taught a variety of courses through Interdisciplinary Studies, some stemming from his original field of training in European cultural history and others on the ancient Maya, a field which he developed on his own and introduced to HSU.

For the next 10 years, he was attached to the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences where he offered courses through the college (”Darwin and Darwinism”), and through the departments of World Languages and Culture (”The European Discovery of the World” and “Maya Hiero-glyphic Writing”), Religious Studies (”From Christianity to Atheism”) and Geography (”European Cultural History in the Age of Discovery”).

In 2004, he joined the faculty of the Department of Geography, where he currently serves. His chief academic interests are concentrated in two courses: “Darwin and Darwinism,” which he has been teaching since introducing the course in 1981, and a series of “Maya Hieroglyphic Writing” workshops introduced to HSU in 1987 and currently offered through the Depart-ment of World Languages and Culture.
