A collection of columns written by Eva Murray over the course of several years, this collection serves to highlight something that most people in the modern world forget: the frontier exists, and people do still live there, and their lifestyle is considerably different from ours. Local customs and culture are emphasized, the conveniences that the average person takes for granted are completely absent, and creativity and independence of thought are intertwined with a reliance on neighbors show more that is often found lacking in more developed communities. It is far from a paradise - far indeed - but for those who live there, it is a purpose and religion and way of existing that makes sense to no one but the residents, and is a source of envy for many outsiders. A good book to read on the subway, or anywhere else in the city when an escape is needed. show less
St. Barth trip Book #4: So this was a perfect juxtaposition book for my tropical rest on the gorgeous island of St. Barth! And i loved this book. I've always had some unexplainable mental connection with islands and have had the chance to spend some time on one small one off the coast of Maine, and in the St. Lawrence River. Maybe a wee-bit repetitive at times, but then, that was show more also part of the point.....the misinformation about Matinicus just keeps going on and on and on!! This was a perfect match for my simple soul and mind.....if you are looking for a fascinating, fun, quick read....i highly recommend.....and a big thanks to Russ & Jenny for giving this to me for Christmas!! show less
