Ormerod's detailed colored drawings add to the haunting feeling of this story of a farmer's daughter who loves a hawk's freedom, even when she learns that neighbors' chickens are being eaten.  Unfortunately the book is poorly designed and images do break in the gutter, but it's still worth reading, savoring.  Best for ages 7-10 even though it is shaped like a picture book.

I really enjoyed this book. it explains about birds and they way of life and how sometimes they can be in danger. i loved how the little girl cared for the bird.
