Jim Butterfield

This is the book that bought when I purchased the Commodore 64 Assembler/Disassembler at KMart. Taught myself programming (in assembler) basically so I could beat a game I'd typed in from a magazine. This is the book that was literally the foundation of my software career. Given the trajectory of my forty years as a software engineer, this totally deserves five stars, although I never expect to read it again.
