This little book was published in 1881 "Expressly compiled for middle-class schools and pupils preparing for the Oxford and Cambridge Local Examinations". This was at the time when America had 38 States and 9 Territories. It wss at the time that The population of the world was estimated at 1,200 millions divided into five races: The Caucasian; The Mongolian; The Negro; The Malay and The Indian according to Blumenbach.
Much of the description of countries, their peoples and produce is very show more niaive compared to today's thinking, but is indicative of the attitudes prevailing at the end of the 19th century.
