What a cool freaking book. The endpapers alone (an array of vintage-looking monster stamps) sent a thrill up my spine. From the illustrator of the Time Warp Trio series and prolific poet Bobbi Katz, comes this book of poetry about monsters written from the perspective of a moster expert (or monsterologist). You have the usual fare here: ogres, trolls, dracula, etc. But you also get a bunch of creative creatures thrown in, too: the Compu-monster, the Verbivore, and the Surfing Sock-Eater. show more
Best for upper-elementary, I think. Not overly scary, mostly fun, with spectacular graphic design and an engaging premise. show less

In my opinion, “A Family Hanukkah” is a fabulous story for children for three main reasons: the writing, the plot, and the illustrations. This book is an educational multicultural book that teaches children about the Jewish holiday, Hanukkah. The plot tells of two young children during their Hanukkah celebration with their parents and grandparents. They start to prepare for the first day of Hanukkah by making presents for their family members. Then they get together with their family, show more and they ask, “Why do we celebrate Hanukkah?” The grandpa tells them that he will explain why they celebrate Hanukkah. The writing within the grandfather’s story flows very well. The grandfather talks about the Syrian army and then transitions to talking about the Maccabees. The gorgeously painted illustrations portray the grandpa telling his story to the whole family. The illustrations also show the historical story of the Hanukkah holiday. The big idea is to teach children the importance of Hanukkah and to show children how people typically celebrate the holiday. show less
I love everything about cryptids and this book was amazing! Awesome illustrations throughout and poetry rhymes about Medusa, Loch Ness monster, Yeti, Kraken and more! A must read for any monster fan, regardless of age!
A very stimulating poetry book. The illustrations are vibrant and colorful featuring text with kooky fonts and numerous onomatopoeia words. The poems not only focus of sounds words but also rhyming words. This is a good book to a suggest a young child read when exploring poetry and creative writing.
