We owned the whole set of these books, in my family growing up. I loved every one of them; the sheer variety was one of the draws. There are illustrated children's stories, abridged versions of classics, essays about nature or geography, and they're all written to be interesting to kids. I saved a few volumes of this series, still love to re-read them every once in awhile.

This is one of a series of books published in the 1950s. In each one are a collection of fiction stories by some of the best children's authors, and nonfiction about our earth and the people on it. In this one are stories by: Robert Louis Stevenson, the D'Aulaires, Marjorie Flack, Aesop, Gruelle and Schlein, as well as stories about preserving wildlife, being a magician, our planet Earth and Israel.

I love all the stories in this edition-though perhaps not too PC for today, eh?
