Quite a surprise to read some of the stories included here...Carl Schurz of Germany, who escaped execution by the Prussian Army, emigrated and who, it is said, did more than any other one man to help Lincoln be elected. The Northern Cheyenne who fled a reservation in Oklahoma, determined to return to their home in the Black Hills of South Dakota...or die trying, and many of them did die...this was in 1878, when Carl Schurz was Secretary of the Interior.
