Short biography

This was a very promising start to a new series that I'm now very intrigued about! On her 8th birthday, Nola's father gives her her late mother's music box, which turns out to contain a hidden magical world that her mother used to visit. There's a lot of hints that things are not right in Pandorient, but I know Nola will be back. I'm looking forward to finding out more about Pandorient, and reading about Nola's adventures there.

This is an oddly beautiful graphic novel. It’s about a little girl Nolla who has lost her mother. It’s her eighth birthday and her dad assured her that it is one OK to celebrate and that her mother was looking forward to giving her a special gift. The special gift is an odd little music box. Later in the evening Nolla comes to learn that her music box is an inhabitant of a special world that she shrinks down explores. There she meets another girl her age and her brother and their sick show more mother and it’s up to Nola to help make her better and figure out what is poisoning her. Pandoriant is an odd little world the people are almost fairy or nymph like but there are monsters and Beings that are both good and evil or funny and grouchy. It’s an entirely new world or Nolla has no idea what’s going on. She’s been told to be careful because this new world is dangerous but besides what’s happening to her new friend’s mom, she doesn’t understand why it’s dangerous. We don’t get much beyond that in book number one, but it was really intriguing, and the art is beautiful. It’s a style of art not normally found in most graphic novels. This book is translated from French, and it’s very well done. So far there are a total of five books, and I plan on reading every one of them. show less
'Through Lya's Eyes' is a mystery comic about a paraplegic girl which has a fair amount to recommend it, but ultimately feels like a bit of a dud. The heroine, Lya, is a young woman confined to a wheelchair after being knocked down in a hit and run accident. In an attempt to find out who the driver was, she takes a job at as an intern at a law firm which she believes she will find clues.
Lya is an engaging heroine and her disability was sensitively handled. The artwork is good too, especially show more in the flashbacks to the accident. The problem is that the story lacks any real tension. Lya's investigation requires her to take risks, but I never felt she was in any real danger. This being just part one of the story, it ends on a massive cliffhanger. It may be that the series going forward is more engaging,. but I'm afraid this instalment failed to grip me. show less
The art in this is so gorgeous, the world intriguing, but the writing is so on the nose! I don't think even young children need to hear the character tell them she's sad when, y'know, she's crying.
