Compact but lavishly illustrated, The Hamlyn History of Mythology is structured thematically. Rather than dividing the book according to area, it places the more well-known (in the west, at least) myths from the Classical World and Ancient Egypt alongside those form India, the Americas, Africa, China and Japan--something I found very interesting. It's for the beginner or the amateur, probably, but as such it's a great leaping off place which encourages the formation of new connections.

Divided by themes, rather than by countries, this text enables the reader to compare and contrast the world's mythologies from creation, through the underworld, to the afterlife. Myths from Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome and lesser known mythologies from Asia and the Americas are featured.
